3rd Quantum Training Days on quantum bits on 10-11 October
In this mini course we will learn about the characterization of noise in qubits and quantum gates.
The lectures will be given by Arghavan Safavi-Naini (QuSoft, IoP, UvA) and Jonas Helsen (QuSoft, CWI).
This workshop is now fully booked. Please contact Doutzen Abma directly if you like to join.
In this mini course we will learn about the characterization of noise in qubits and quantum gates.
On Monday October 10, Jonas Helsen will cover:
10:30 - 12:30:
- States, channels, expectation values and fidelities
- Representation theory: the absolute basics
- Randomized benchmarking: what is it, and how does it work, with sample complexities
13:30 - 15:30
- State tomography and its limitations
- State shadow tomography, the why and how
- Sample complexity bounds for Clifford state shadow tomography
16:00 - 18:00:
- Exercises on the mathematics of RB and shadow tomography. We will derive "local Clifford" versions of the protocols introduced in the lectures.
Arghavan Safavi Naini will cover on Tuesday October 11:
08:30 - 10:30:
- How does an ion trap work?
- What makes a good qubit?
- How does a qubit interact with electromagnetic fields?
11:00 - 13:00:
- How can we make a two-qubit gate?
- How can we do a simple quantum simulation?
- Experimental examples of quantum simulation, randomized benchmarking, and observation of entanglement dynamics
14:00 - 16:00:
- The students will simulate how a crystal of ions is formed in the trap, find the motional modes, and calculate the effective Hamiltonian.
A few things to keep in mind.
- We would like you to attend this training. The Quantum Software Consortium offers to pay the costs for you (~ 90 euro per person). If you register, we expect you to show up and attend this training.
- As many students have registered, the hostel is full. You can register for the waiting list. QSC-students have priority, as Postdocs and PhD-students have. This training is open for second-year master students, but they can not stay at the hostel, as it has been fully booked.
- There is no public transport to the stayokay. Therefore we arrange a QSC bus from Leiden Central Station to the stayokay on October 10 at 9:40. On October 11 at 16:20 the QSC bus will return to Leiden Central Station.
