Tenure-track position in the Cryptology Group

Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam invites excellent researchers to apply for a

Tenure-track position in the Cryptology Group

The CWI Cryptology Group investigates fundamental  questions in cryptology from a broad scientific perspective.
We are looking for an excellent scientist with a successful track record showing research of high-quality,
 as evidenced by a body of publications in leading international conferences/journals, and
of substantial relevance to cryptology. You find inspiration in collaborations within related areas of interest, specifically in mathematics, computer science and physics. In particular, you demonstrate a clear interest in cryptographic security in the presence of quantum computing. Most importantly, you will display the ability and capacity to develop an independent research program of funded research.

This position is established as part of the Quantum Software Consortium (QSC), a 10-year grant for fundamental research awarded in 2017 and funded through the Gravitation programme of NWO (Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research). QSC is a project of University of Amsterdam, Leiden University, Delft University of Technology, Center for Mathematics
and Computer Science (CWI) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The project is carried out in collaboration with QuTech (Delft) and with QuSoft (Amsterdam).

Therefore, apart from the general requirements listed earlier, you are expected to contribute to the general aims of the QSC program (http://www.quantumsc.nl/ABOUT-QSC2/About-QSC/)  for the duration of the grant, research-wise in so far as they pertain to cryptology. You will also find synergy with the QSC-research (and other research) ongoing within the Cryptology Group at CWI. There is substantial collaboration on QSC research between the Cryptology Group and the Mathematical Institute at Leiden University.

The position is located at the CWI and hosted by the Cryptology Group. As such there are no teaching requirements. However, you are expected to collaborate on the development of course material on relevant cryptologic topics and occasionally teach a course on this material at Leiden University.

CWI encourages a diverse workforce: we endeavor to develop talent and creativity by bringing people from different backgrounds and cultures together. We recruit and select based on capabilities and talent. We strongly encourage everyone with the appropriate qualifications to apply for the vacancy, regardless of age, gender, origin, sexual orientation or physical abilities.

We especially invite qualified women to apply.

Terms and conditions
The position is initially for three or five years depending on knowledge and experience. Consideration for a tenured position at the start may be given to exceptionally well-qualified individuals.
At the end of a successful tenure track term a permanent scientific staff position will be offered. Criteria for evaluation comprise a track record of publications that is well above average, and the ability to acquire funding and to build up an (inter)national network and reputation and to supervise PhD’s. You will get a start-up package consisting of a PhD and a postdoc position, to enable a quick start of your research program.
The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labor Agreement for Research Centres ("CAO-onderzoeksinstellingen"). Depending on relevant work experience, the gross monthly starting salary for an employee on a full-time basis ranges from € 3,682 to € 5,757.
Employees are also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.33%. CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling and help with housing for expat employees.
CWI expects its tenure-track researchers to speak Dutch at the end of the tenure track.

Information and application
Applicants should send:

  • a motivation letter;
  • a curriculum vitae with a list of publications;
  • copies of their three most prominent publications;
  • the names of at least three prominent scientists who can provide letters of recommendation;
  • a research statement and a research plan for the coming years, including plans on how to acquire additional funding.

Please email the application no later than Dec 15, 2019 to apply@cwi.nl.

Additional information can be obtained from Prof. Ronald Cramer (Head of the Cryptology Group, CWI & Professor, Mathematical Institute, Leiden University), email: cramer@cwi.nl, cramer@math.leidenuniv.nl.
